June Newsletter

We have had an incredible month of clinics and shows, and we’ve got full coverage of the much-anticipated Lynn Palm clinic later in this newsletter. But we’re just getting started with the exciting events for the rest of the summer. Keep reading for photo highlights from the farm and our complete 2017 event schedule.

Special Feature: The Most Important Lesson You Can Teach Your Horse

We like to share training tidbits whenever possible, but we recently stumbled across some internet wisdom from trainer Dale Rudin that was too good not to share:

“As a trainer, I think the most important thing I can teach a horse is fearlessness. There are two reasons for this.

One: horses are driven by fear. It is their number one motivator because of the way their brains perceive the world. Remember they are prey animals. Being fearful is a highly effective way to stay alive.

Two: When a horse is afraid he can NOT learn and what will be imprinted in her brain is a negative association with whatever is happening or whatever you are doing that is causing her to be afraid. On the other hand, a fearless horse knows it is safe to express her feelings, explore her world, and trust her human companion. Even if she does become confused, uncertain, or insecure, she continues to think and tries to work through the problem without become highly stressed or reactive.

Fearless horses are safer to be around, happier, and more comfortable in their own skin and within their surroundings. Teaching a horse to be fearless takes time, compassion, and skill. It isn’t easy. It doesn’t just happen. However, it is TOTALLY worth it.”

Horses are social herd animals, so training techniques should take those instincts into account.

Horses are social herd animals, so training techniques should take those instincts into account.

Dale’s philosophy here takes a horse’s natural behaviors and herd instincts into account. As herd and prey animals, they are often skeptical of new things until they learn that those things will not harm them. Positive reinforcement works well to help them associate new stimuli with rewarding experiences. Keep those ideas in mind as you work with your own horses!

Horse Massage Clinic

What horse wouldn't love a clinic dedicated to massage therapy?!

What horse wouldn’t love a clinic dedicated to massage therapy?!

Petra Rodin recently joined us at Clearview to host a Masterson therapy massage clinic. The Masterson method takes a unique approach to massage where you learn to use your horse’s responses to touch to find areas of tension and release them to improve their well-being and performance. In other words, the horse participates in the massage along with the owner.

Now that is the face of utter happiness!

Now that is the face of utter happiness!

Needless to say, the lucky horses who got to participate in the clinic enjoyed a lovely day of pampering! Petra, thank you for sharing your techniques and wisdom!

The Best Way to Spend a Birthday

Okay, time for a show of hands. How many of you dreamed of getting a pony for your birthday or at least wanted a horse-themed birthday party when you were a child?

Don happily jumped into the birthday festivities.

Don happily jumped into the birthday festivities.

That many, huh? Well, we can certainly understand why! Horses make birthdays even more amazing, especially to a child. This lovely young lady got the birthday of her dreams by spending it at Clearview with her horse.

What's better than a birthday pie? Not much!

What’s better than a birthday pie? Not much!

Her parents write, “Happy 11th Birthday to my sweet Sarah! She leaves a little sparkle everywhere she goes and some barn dirt too! It is not a surprise that she wished to celebrate her birthday at the barn with her horse. Thanks Don M CharestClearview Farm Marie Lloyd and Cam for helping make her day extra special!”

And of course, the mandatory birthday photo with her horse. That's going in the photo keepsake album!

Happiest of birthdays to you, Sarah! We had a blast celebrating with you!

Arena Reports: Lynn Palm Clinic

Lynn Palm’s back-to-back clinics were definitely one of the major highlights from this month. Her small class sizes meant that spots in the clinic sold out months in advance, but she welcomed auditors to watch, ask questions, and take her tips and tricks home to their own horses.

Auditors enjoyed the clinics almost as much as the attendees!

Auditors enjoyed the clinics almost as much as the attendees!

And the small class sizes meant that attendees enjoyed tons of personalized attention and feedback during the two-day clinics.

Our clinic attendees definitely learned a lot in their horsemanship!

Thank you to Lynn Palm for coming out to Clearview and for all the attendees, auditors, and support who helped make the clinics such a great success!

He’s extremely “honest,” in that you never have to worry about guessing his moods before a show or change classes at the last minute. And when he’s not cleaning house in the show ring or training, he has a gelding as a pasture buddy, enjoys his leisure time, and gets along great with other horses on trail rides. In fact, he’s so laid back that people who have never met him are often shocked to learn that he’s a stallion!

He will lead or follow and also rides out on his own just fine. His gait is as smooth as silk and will go all day long, anywhere you point he will go. He is sure-footed and will go through water, over logs, and over bridges. He is up to date on all shots, vaccinations, and Coggins and good for the farrier. The only reason for sale is we are reducing stock, so Diego is ready and eagerly looking for his next trail buddy! May 2017 Newsletter

As May draws to a close, we wish to honor Memorial Day and send our thoughts and prayers to the families who have lost loved ones in the armed forces. Thank you to the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom.

It’s also now officially summer! Keep on reading for the highlights from our clinics and events this month!

Special Feature: Happy Birthday to Marie!

First and foremost, we want to wish a happy birthday to Marie! This amazing lady keeps Clearview running like a well-oiled machine, and we love having her in Shelbyville. She celebrated with a lovely night out with friends.

Baby Geese

This past spring has been a great year for nesting birds, and we even had a family of geese make their home in our pond. How cute!

Long Ear Perspective!

Have you ever tried to wrangle the reins in one hand and a camera in the other? It isn’t exactly the easiest task in the world, but it sure makes for some entertaining photos!

Sometimes you just need to take a break and see the world from a mule's perspective.

What happened to Don’s dog?!

Okay, this one is totally a trick question. Have you ever seen a corgi with a haircut like this? Don’s ever-loyal corgi was started to feel the summer heat, so now she’s sporting a much more comfortable (and cool!) summer cut. She’s become quite the permanent fixture around the farm and looks adorable!

We're betting Don's corgi feels much more comfortable now!

Charlie Hutton Clinic

Charlie Hutton’s much-anticipated clinic was certainly the highlight of the month, and it felt just like old times when he lived and worked on the farm. Attendees had the opportunity to ask whatever questions they wanted, and Charlie tailored the clinic to the needs of his students.

Charlie's clinic had great attendance, and he was more than happy to give personalized attention alongside his old friend Corona.

Special Feature: Lynn Palm is coming to Clearview! Here’s why you should be excited.

Lynn Palm is a Western Dressage champion, and we can't wait to host her clinic!

Lynn Palm is a Western Dressage champion, and we can’t wait to host her clinic!

Summer is just around the corner, which means our event schedule is kicking into high gear! Keep checking our event schedule on our website to stay up to date on the latest clinics and shows that Clearview is hosting, as we still have weekends open for booking.

We’re especially excited about the Lynn Palm clinics, which occur from June 22-25. Her clinics initially sold out within one day, but we have recently had two spots open up for the June 22-23 clinic. These spots won’t last long, so call us ASAP to claim a spot before it’s gone! You can also ask to be put on a waiting list in case of cancellations. If you’re already registered, make sure to book your stalls early! You can also audit the clinic for $25, plus $5 for parking.

So why are we so excited for Lynn Palm? Well, we just received this breaking press release from the FEI World Cup Finals in Omaha, and Lynn Palm wowed audiences with freestyle exhibitions and clinics on Western Dressage and horsemanship. Check out the press release below:

Omaha, NE was home to the 2017 FEI World Cup Finals March 29-April 2. In addition to world class competition in both dressage and jumping, the Omaha Equestrian Foundation brought education, entertainment and social events to an international stage. Lynn Palm brought Western Dressage to the forefront with freestyle exhibitions and educational clinics.During the highly anticipated Dressage Showcase, Palm and American Quarter Horse Hot N Royal performed Level 1 maneuvers to a medley of western-themed classical music. Hot N Royal, a 9 year old gelding owned by Adelaide Pickett of Crystal River, FL, impressed the crowd with his elegance and classical movement all in western tack and attire.

Then Palm returned to the Main Arena for a second freestyle with her partner Rugged Painted Lark. At 20 years old, American Paint Horse Rugged Painted Lark owned by Palm and Heidi Burkhalter stunned with an array of advanced movements including half pass at jog and lope, canter pirouettes and flying lead changes. In more ranch themed tack and attire, Lynn and Bruce, as he is affectionately known, showed their skills one handed using romel reins, a staple in western tradition.

In addition to the Western Dressage Freestyles, Palm presented educational clinics in both the Demo Ring and Main Arena. While spreading the message of sound horsemanship, Palm emphasized that classical dressage principles are beneficial for every horse and rider and every discipline, including all breeds of horses performing in western dressage.

Palm’s mission was to showcase willing and balanced horses in their performances, mission accomplished.

For those who were unable to attend, the recorded performances have been uploaded to Palm’s youtube channel as well as the Palm Partnership Training Facebook page. The video posts have reached nearly 200,000 since the event with comments from all over the globe in support of Western Dressage.

March 2017 Newsletter

Spring is in the air! We definitely stayed busy this month, first hosting John Lyons and then traveling to attend one of his clinics! Plus, we have an exciting announcement about our good friend Charlie Hutton. Keep reading for full details on an event that you won’t want to miss!

Special Feature: Charlie Hutton is coming to Clearview!

Charlie Hutton is coming back to Clearview for a one-day-only clinic!

Charlie Hutton is coming back to Clearview for a one-day-only clinic!

Big news! Many of you no doubt remember our good friend Charlie Hutton, who lived at Clearview for years while training Western reining and ranch riding horses. We absolutely loved having him on the farm as a wealth of knowledge and were sad to see him move for his retirement. Well, he called the farm recently and says that he’s missing all his friends down here. Therefore, he is officially coming back to Clearview on Saturday, May 13th to celebrate and host a clinic on ranch Riding, reining, trail, or anything else we want! Charlie is a wealth of information on riding and horsemanship thanks to his extensive background in judging and training.

The clinic will cost $65 for the day and $20 per stall. Call us at Clearview ASAP to reserve your spot and stall for your horse!

Pre-Clinic Baking Adventures!

Before the John Lyons clinic, we thought it would only be appropriate, as proper hosts, to offer refreshments for our esteemed clinician. So a couple days before the clinic, we embarked on a little culinary experiment to bake savory mini pies.

You know it's one of those days when you're using a bottle of oil as a rolling pin.

You know it’s one of those days when you’re using a bottle of oil as a rolling pin.

After a little bit of practice, we wound up with a perfectly presentable and delicious pie! Plus the farm dogs may have gotten a little snack with their dinner…

And the finished product!

And the finished product!

Clearview and…College Visits?

Usually our out-of-town guests visit us and stay in our comfy bedroom suites while attending clinics, but we also serve as a great alternative to hotels for prospective college students! Check out this testimonial from our friend Diane Dunning:

No college visit is complete without some time spent in the saddle!

No college visit is complete without some time spent in the saddle!

“Came up yesterday afternoon so Anna could check out MTSU. Clearview never ceases to amaze me – the love here is amazing. WDAAL board meeting this morning, and riding this afternoon. I am on the sidelines after twisting my “good” ankle, but still having a good time!”

No college visit could be complete without meeting MTSU’s mascot.

Anyone else ever met MTSU's mascot?

And of course, our prospective college student just so happened to visit during a Western dressage clinic:

Announcement: Patrick King Clinic Canceled

We wish to update everyone that the Patrick King Clinic has been canceled for April. Hopefully we can reschedule at a later date, and we will keep you updated on any changed.

John Lyons Clinic

We had an absolutely brilliant evening with John Lyons when he came to Clearview. We had plenty of fascinating and humorous exchanges between him and those of us in the audience. His horses Charlie and Preacher kept us all entertained!

Marie got to help demonstrate Mr. Lyons' techniques!

Don of course had to get a picture with him. And who wouldn’t?

Love the photo!

Mr. Lyons and his wife Jody were very gracious folks, and it was indeed an honor to have them as guests. Thank you to everyone who made the evening such a great success!

John Lyons Clinic: Round 2!

We enjoyed hosting John Lyons so much that Marie and Prada, her young Appaloosa filly, hit the road to spend another weekend at his clinic at the Circle G Ranch, this time in the saddle and learning firsthand. Plus the lack of cell signal meant no distractions!

John Lyons and Prada

Of course, any good road trip required a furry little travel buddy.

Bandit was ready for the chilly weather!

Bandit was ready for the chilly weather!

This trip was Prada’s first time away from home, and she took everything in stride like a superstar. She was so level headed during the clinic as well. Overall, she made immense progress for a young green horse, and John Lyons made his concepts easy to understand.

The clinic was a blast!

Corona Extra Chex, son of Nu Chex to Cash, is standing at stud at Clearview, and you could not ask for a more personable stallion to sire your next foal.

Plus, we have a sneaky suspicion that Charlie will want to ride Corona in his upcoming clinic…

Diego is a flashy, sure-footed trail horse perfect for an advanced beginner!

Diego is a 14.2 hand chestnut and white spotted TWH gelding, solid broke and fun trail horse for the advanced beginner rider! We have taken him trail riding numerous amounts of times. He does well at all the local fun shows due to his eye catching appearance and solid gait. Click this link for more photos and a video! http://www.equinenow.com/horse-ad-1059309

February 2017 Newsletter

We’ve had an exceptionally warm February compared to last year, so we’ve had a great month enjoying the beautiful weather and hosting events. Our clinics and shows kick into high gear in March, so make sure to check out our updated event calendar at the end of this post!

Special Feature: Who is John Lyons?

15219380_10208904568506428_3147523530496611773_n

We are thrilled to host John Lyons on March 8th for an evening focused on natural horsemanship. If you’ve already signed up to attend, then we can’t wait for you to join us! If you’ve never attended a John Lyons clinic before, here is what you need to know:

1) He specializes in natural horsemanship.

Like many of our other clinicians, John Lyons specializes in natural horsemanship, which focuses on developing a rapport with your horse and gentle techniques based on the behavior of free-roaming horses.

2) He incorporates psychology into his training.

John bases his training techniques on the principles of operant conditioning, where the rider uses clear, consistent, and gentle cues to reinforce positive behavior and discourage negative behavior. He also encourages his students to focus on setting specific, manageable goals over time rather than immediate, dramatic results.

3) He is outspoken about his faith and family.

John is a devout Christian and talks about his faith in his presentations and clinics. He is also happily married to his wife Jody, and they have seven children and twelve grandchildren. Horsemanship clearly runs in the family, as two of their children also train horses.

4) His methods have already worked for us!

Just listen to this testimonial from Marie’s days back in England!

“Whilst I was still in England, after numerous jumping accidents, it was the John Lyons method I turned to in my attempt to master a different approach to horsemanship. I learned and studied his books and DVD s and worked at retraining myself and my hard-headed English Cob! I was the laughing stock of the English barn, with my old Western saddle and the audio tape stuck in my ear! But I persevered, and that young cob and I had a completely different relationship and I never fell off him again!”

5) He offers a wide variety of equine training services, clinics, and even special events!

John Lyons offers a wide range of training services, from consultations to multiday clinics. He offers private training sessions, evening demonstrations, and will even travel to his clients. He also offers his ranch, dubbed the Dream Ranch, to rent for weddings and special events. You can check out his website for complete details at https://www.johnlyons.com/

Western Dressage of Tennessee is holding a play day January 21 and 22 2017 at Clearview so we can find officers to help establish our new WDAA Affiliate. If you don’t have a horse, it doesn’t matter! We need members, so come with or without a horse for an hour, a day, or 2 days.

We want to establish our mission statement, part of which is the fact that we will be taking advantage of Western Dressage classes at horse shows offered for example, by the CTDA. We want to encourage you to get your feet wet, for those of you out there sitting on the fence! Western Dressage is open to any breed of horse, so you don’t have to own it. It doesn’t even matter if it’s not registered . The organization is going to be spearheaded by Katharina Nowotny-Boles, a qualified dressage judge in classic and western dressage, who has attended all the clinics and seminars hosted by the WDAA, so she is amply qualified to guide us and be our President. Our own Don M Charest is a WDAA certified trainer. With such great people as part of the team, join us now, and help make next year’s efforts fun and friendly. We want to support each other’s endeavors as a group and improve our horsemanship so we can enjoy the ride together. See you there!

October was an amazing month, with two excellent clinics and plenty of farm guests, so keep on reading for the full highlight reel!

Wanted: Like-Minded Horse Trainers to Join the Clearview Family!

By the end of November, we will be done with hosting horse shows for the season and will have over 50 stalls in the show barn available to one or more trainers at very reasonable rates on a strictly do-it-yourself basis. We are looking for good people, preferably Western, who can be part of the happy expanding family here at Clearview. The show barn offers wonderful amenities, including spacious stalls, cross-ties, and wash areas. Two on-site apartments will also be available for rent.

Our show barn has high-quality, roomy stalls ideal for a trainer with multiple horses.

If you’re looking for long-term boarding for multiple horses for training as well as living quarters, give us a call at 931-619-0773 to discuss pricing!

Word in the Herd

Our horses and mules absolutely love this cooler fall weather, and we’ve enjoyed having guests come to the farm for trail riding. In fact, we kicked off the month of October with an all-mule ride!

We had a little impromptu mule celebration with this fun group!

In some ways, this month has felt like an extension of summer, as the weather has still been warm enough to enjoy water-based activities as well. We have a sizable pond next to the office, and it’s a great place to launch a kayak for some relaxation on a warm afternoon. JT and Tyler took a break from mucking stalls to do just that!

When you need a break from farm chores, why not go kayaking?

Tennessee Stock Horse Show

Back on the home front, we had two well-attended clinics. First, our good friend Brandi hosted yet another wonderful Tennessee Stock Horse clinic and schooling show. These events are always great fun and welcoming to multiple breeds and levels of experience. Make sure to check out their website to see when their next show will take place!

Buck Brannaman Clinic

However, the highlight of the month was definitely the Buck Brannaman Clinic. We had a huge influx of visitors to attend the clinic, board their horses, and audit, but we had lots of great help to ensure that things ran smoothly. Heather and her horse Jingaling were on patrol Wednesday to help check in attendees and get them settled.

Nothing like horse mounted registration!

Heather and Angie also worked the concession stand to sell snacks and drinks.

Thank you so much to all our hard-working horse friends!

Thank you so much to all our hard-working horse friends!

The indoor arena was packed with a full class of clinic attendees to work on their horsemanship with Buck Brannaman. In between classes, another crew of people ran the tractor to keep the arena in good working shape for the large number of people and horses.

Talk about a full house! Buck's clinic sold out months in advance.

Fortunately, folks that couldn’t take the clinic could still audit on a daily basis and take photos and notes to apply to their own riding. The stands were packed, and people kept bringing lawn chairs to fill up any available space.

The auditors easily outnumbered the clinic attendees!

Overall, the week was easily one of our most successful clinics, and we were honored to host Buck Brannaman at Clearview! Hopefully we’ll see him again! In the meantime, check out Buck’s website to find his full clinic schedule!

We want to give a HUGE thank you to Buck and all of our farm hands and volunteers who made the week so successful!

Corona Extra Chex Stud Service – $850

Corona makes new friends wherever he goes.

Corona Extra Chex, son of Nu Chex to Cash, is standing at stud at Clearview, and you could not ask for a more personable stallion to sire your next foal.

Diego, 5 year old gaited flashy TWH gelding – $2500 OBO

Diego is a flashy, sure-footed trail horse perfect for an advanced beginner!

He does well at all the local fun shows due to his eye catching appearance and solid gait. Click this link for more photos and a video! http://www.equinenow.com/horse-ad-1059309

September Newsletter

Happy first days of fall! The weather is finally cooling down, and we’ve got some highly anticipated shows and clinics to wrap up the year. Let’s start by introducing our upcoming clinician, Buck Brannaman, and why we’re so excited to have him come to Clearview!

Special Feature: So who is Buck Brannaman?

We can't wait for Buck's clinic!

We can’t wait for Buck’s clinic!

We’ve been promoting and advertising the Buck Brannaman clinic for months, and you’ve probably heard us refer to him as “The Horse Whisperer.” But you may still have some questions about just who he is, so let’s give you the run-down:

1) Buck focuses on natural horsemanship.

Buck Brannaman is considered one of the leading practitioners of natural horsemanship, which focuses on working with a horse’s nature and training horses based on how they think and communicate. He learned from Ray Hunt, one of the founders of the natural horsemanship movement, and now teaches clinics around the world, works as a motivational speaker, and promotes equestrian practices such as therapeutic riding. He aims to make horses feel safe and secure around humans so that horse and rider can truly work together.

2) He carries his childhood experiences into his horsemanship.

Due to a rough childhood, Buck and his brother spent a number of years in foster care, where he took solace in horses and learned to look at a situation from the horse’s point of view. He uses his experiences to relate to difficult or traumatized horses and help them overcome their pasts.

3) When he’s not teaching clinics or helping troubled horses, he may be doing some trick roping.

Buck actually began performing rope tricks in television commercials as young as six years old, and he also holds two spots in the Guinness Book of World Records! As a result, he also offers roping and cattle working clinics.

4) Buck really did inspire the writing of The Horse Whisperer.

Have you ever read Nicholas Evans’ novel, The Horse Whisperer? The author himself said that Buck was the primary inspiration for the character of Tom Booker, who rehabilitates a traumatized horse and his rider in the book. Buck also served as the primary equine consultant when the book was adapted for a movie.

5) He teaches clinics across the country.

Buck is an extremely well-traveled clinician and trainer, teaching clinics from the east to the west coast and promoting his style of natural horsemanship. He posts updates on his clinic schedule on Facebook and his website, so make sure to bookmark the links. His clinics fill up fast!

Now that you know a little more about Buck, you can no doubt understand why we’re so excited to have him come to Clearview to teach a clinic! Keep reading until the end for the exact dates and times if you’re already registered to attend or wish to audit!

Word in the Herd

We love seeing new friendships blossom between people and horses, and there’s just something particularly heart-warming when that moment occurs between a horse and a young girl. A lovely young lady named Sara met her new horse at our farm, a superb Appaloosa show mare named Fancy.

We know these two are definitely going to be best friends!

It was definitely love at first sight for Sara, and we know Fancy will have a wonderful life with her new family.

Happy trails to Fancy and her new family!
